Scouts and First Responders Demonstrate Respect Through Proper Flag Retirement

The American flag represents the freedoms, sacrifices, and values that unite our nation. When a flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it deserves to be retired with the dignity and respect it has earned. Recently, members of the Laurel Highlands Council joined local first responders and community volunteers for a meaningful flag retirement ceremony, demonstrating the importance of honoring Old Glory the right way.

In the ceremony, Scouts worked alongside members of local law enforcement and community leaders to carefully fold and prepare retired American flags before their respectful retirement. The event served as both a lesson in citizenship and an opportunity for Scouts to practice the values of reverence, service, and patriotism that are central to the Scouting program.

Flag retirement ceremonies are an important tradition within Scouting. Scouts learn the proper handling, folding, and respectful disposal of the American flag while gaining a deeper appreciation for the history and symbolism it represents. These experiences help build character and reinforce the Scout Oath and Scout Law through hands-on service to their communities.
